Engineering and Surveying
E.D. Pons Associates, P.C. provided the structural engineering services for a new medical office building for the Geisinger Health System. The facility will support offices as well as provide services for outpatients.
The office building is a two-story steel framed structure. The floors are constructed of composite steel deck supported by steel beams. Steel beams were selected for the floor framing in-place of steel joists because they provide the owner with maximum flexibility for adding medical equipment without costly structural modifications. Lateral support is provided by steel braced frames. This provides the owner with reduced steel tonnage while allowing for future building floor plan changes because of the braced frame locations. There is a large cantilevered canopy at the front of the building. The canopy shield patients from inclement weather during dropoff and pick-up.
