E.D. Pons and Associates provided the structural analysis and design for the bridge along Sterling road in Wayne County, PA. The existing bridge is a multi-span bridge with stone abutments. The top of the abutments were failing and the bridge beams had rotated off axis. Our report recommended replacement of the bridge framing and the repair of the abutments.
The design of the new bridge was completed utilizing PennDOT guidelines and software. Due to cost considerations and to simplify the approval process it was determined to try to use a portion of the existing abutments. The stone abutments were analyzed and a concrete cap was designed to support the bridge load without overstressing the existing abutments. A wood deck was designed for the bridge to blend in to the rural surroundings.
