Break Area

The new construction is a steel-framed building that is independent of the existing building. Designing the new structure to be independent from the existing one prevented the owner from incurring the cost of upgrading the existing building to meet the lateral force requirements of the current building code. Laterals forces are resisted through moment frames. By using cantilever beams at the roof no additional gravity loads were applied to the existing building. Steel framing was designed to support the existing brick veneer above the new first floor openings. The new steel supports were configured so that none of the existing foundations had to be reinforced.
